Caring for Your Hardwood Floors
Hardwood floors are more popular than ever in the Boise area! They bring a timeless beauty to any space that lasts for years. Whether your wood floors are 100 years old or was installed last month, it’s important to keep them clean. Properly cleaning your hardwood floors will ensure they not only last for years, but that they look great the entire time. Here are a few tips for taking care of your hardwood floors!
KEEP IT SIMPLE
We recommend vacuuming the floor first, then mopping with vinegar and water for most hardwood floors (1 1/2 oz per gal), some cases a small amount of pH -neutral soap and water. It depends on the type of finish on the hardwood floor. The main thing to stress is that the floor needs to be buffed dry after mopping to avoid streaking and dull looking floors. Recommend using a micro fiber wet mop to clean and terry cloth mop heads to buff dry.
AVOID STEAM MOPS
Steam mops seem like such a great idea to clean hardwood floors. Hot water is known to be a great cleaner! The problem is in the fine mist produced by these tools. The mist can penetrate the hardwood floor sealer and get into the hardwood. Once it’s there, it’s very difficult to get out. It can deteriorate and mold over time as a result.
PROTECT WHEN POSSIBLE
It’s inevitable that you’ll need to move furniture around on your hardwood floors. By thinking ahead and using protective pads or other similar items, you can avoid scratches and gouges. You can purchase small stick-on pads from just about any hardware or home store. They are cheap and easy to use.
