If this is the first time you are working with a maid service, or you are wanting to establish new cleaning standards with your existing maid service, this article is for you. First, you need to know that you may not get the perfect clean the first time but if you keep the dialogue open and talk about your expectations, over time the crew will do the tasks you are asking for to the standard you expect. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your relationship.

Establish your standards

Unfortunately, cleaning services cannot read your mind. They need you to talk to them about the specifics of your project. You will want to talk about specific rooms, tasks and other standards you would like to set. Talk to them about which rooms to prioritize as well so they can get the most important rooms clean. You can talk to your cleaning crew, do a walk through or a leave them a written list of priorities. If you have a one-time request like cleaning the guest room for an upcoming visit, you may be able to leave notes specifying this to the cleaning crew or you may need to schedule this ahead of time, depending on how the company schedules their work.

If you have an issue, give specifics

Instead of telling the crew you would like the bathroom to be cleaned better, leave them specific examples of what you would like done differently. For instance – “please pay particular attention to the area around the base of the toilet” or “the shower floor was not as clean as I would like” will help the crew more than “please clean the bathroom more thoroughly”. The more clearly you state the issue, the better the response will be.

Know that perfection may not be possible

If you feel like you are not getting the cleaning, you expect from your housekeeping service, you may want to assess if your standards are achievable. Most cleaning crews do a really great job cleaning but if you have very specific standards, they can be beyond the cleaning crews’ abilities. If they say they will do something and don’t, you should talk to them again, but most will be honest if a task is not practical, achievable or within their package. Sometimes special cleaning tasks like grout cleaning will be extra as it takes a significant amount of time.

It’s important to remember also that cleaning crews can clean your surfaces, but they cannot transform them. Sometimes bathtubs, appliances, carpet, etc. are beyond cleaning and may need to be replaced to really sparkle. Polish and elbow grease can work wonders, but they really can only do so much!

Setting your expectations helps your cleaning crew understand what you want and help them achieve it. It is important to remember that they cannot read your mind and, as with most things, communication is key.
